Family Day
Shalom friends,
On the 30th day of Shvat (ל' שְׁבָט) which falls this year on February 23rd, we celebrate the Family Day (יוֹםהַמִּשְׁפָּחָה, yomhamishpaxa).
In the first decades of the State of Israel it was celebrated as Mother’s day (יוֹםהָאֵם, yomha’em) and emphasized the traditional roles of a mother such as caring for the children and the house. As traditional family roles have been changing, Mother’s Day became Family Day which emphasizes positive family relationships such as love and mutual support.
The date of Yom Hamishpaxa was set to Henrietta Szold’s (1860-1945) birthday. Although Henrietta Szold had no biological children of her own, she was the mother of many young Jewish children that were rescued from Nazi Europe. She also founded Hadassah (הֲדַסָּה), a women’s organization which recruited American Jewish women to upgrade health care in Erets Israel.
Family day gives us a wonderful opportunity to learn Hebrew names of family members and biblical verses related to families.
It began with two parents Jolly and young That gave birth for me To my family And when I have a party Only look at who’s coming Only look at who’s coming:

" Thank you for sending me the latest Newsletter. I can honestly say that this is the best and most informative Newsletter I have ever received from anyone. I really enjoyed the article about Tel Ch’ai and Josef Trumpeldor, and then to be able to hear the song sung in Hebrew while reading a phonetic translation was indeed brilliant. And to top it all there are Hebrew puzzles! You are truly gifted teachers to make learning so interesting. Learning a new language is never easy, especially when one has to learn a new alphabet as well, but you make learning a delight.
Many many thanks – todahrabbah!! And long may you continue. Shalom."
