Shalom and welcome to our newsletter,
Every year we celebrate one special day – our birthday (יוֹם הוּלֶדֶת, yom huledet). Each culture has a special way to celebrate this occasion. In this issue you will meet a few Israeli birthday customs.
One famous Hebrew birthday song says:
Eyn xagiga – bli uga
There’s no celebration – with no cake!
(Words: Smadar Shir; Lyric: Moshe Datz)

Every birthday cake comes with candles - one for each year and an extra candle for the year to come.
After the birthday person blows the candles and makes a wish, we put him or her on a chair and lift the chair up – one lift for every year, and – one more time for the year to come. You probably understand why this custom ends when a person reaches a certain age (or a certain weight…).
Throughout the celebration, the birthday person (especially when it is a child) wears a flower head wreath.
This issue celebrates the 4th year of eTeacherHebrew Newsletters – each one of you can make a wish and ask for topics you would like to read about in the coming year.
