Shalom friends,
In Genesis we read that G-d created the world in six days. At the end of the sixth day G-d looked at what he had done:
“God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31)
“And on the seventh day God finished His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.” (Genesis 2:2)
And in our days, we work six days a week, and on the seventh day we rest as we were commanded in the Ten Commandments. When the sun sets, a new Jewish day begins and therefore Shabat begins in the evening of Friday – we call it "ערב שבת" or "ליל שבת" (Shabat eve, or Shabat night).
