Water Sports in Israel

Shalom friends,

Israel seems to be a perfect place for water sports: There are three bodies of water (the Mediterranean, the Sea of Galilee, and the Red Sea) and the weather is good for water sports almost all year round. However, the available space for water sport is very limited due to many resources that compete for this space (such as the navy and the industry). Also, there is not much public interest and very little sponsorship for these sports in Israel.

In spite of these difficulties, Israel is proud to have won four (out of a total of seven) Olymic medals in water sports.

Gal FridmanGal Fridman won a bronze medal in the Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics in the Mistral men's windsurfing category, and was named Israeli Sportsman of the Year. In the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics, Fridman competed in the same category and won the first (and only, thus far) Olympic gold medal in Israeli history. He dedicated his medal to the memory of the 11 Israeli athletes assassinated by members of the Black September organization, during the Munich Olympics (1972). Not surprisingly, Fridman’s first name, Gal, means a "wave" in the Hebrew language.

Michael KolganovMichael Kolganov won the bronze medal in the K-1 500 m event at the Sydney Summer Olympics of 2000. Kolganov was born in the Soviet Union and made Aliya to Israel in 1995. He was the flag bearer for Israel during the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics.

Shachar ZubariShahar Zubari won the bronze medal surfing in the "Neil Pryde" RS:X discipline at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Zubari brought much pride to Israel and to his hometown Eilat.

These medalists pave the way for more sea sports champs in Israel. But sea sports are much beyond the Olympics – they dovetail the wilderness of the sea, the sun, and the energy of the waves with healthy activity in fresh air. Let us hope that more people keep active while enjoying the beauty and the natural atmosphere of the sea.

בְּהַצְלָחָה!
Behatslaxa!
Good luck!

מִלִּים וְלַחַן: דָּנִי סֶנְדֶרְסוֹן
Sunny bright day
No clouds around
Me and my body
To the sea we drive,
We took the car
The girls are already there
When we arrive at the beach
We’ll take out the surfer.

Here we surf again
Ride the waves
Here comes another big wave
Be careful, don’t you fall
From Bat-Yam Beach to Herzliah,
It’s only me and my surfer.

" Thank you for sending me the latest Newsletter. I can honestly say that this is the best and most informative Newsletter I have ever received from anyone. I really enjoyed the article about Tel Ch’ai and Josef Trumpeldor, and then to be able to hear the song sung in Hebrew while reading a phonetic translation was indeed brilliant. And to top it all there are Hebrew puzzles! You are truly gifted teachers to make learning so interesting. Learning a new language is never easy, especially when one has to learn a new alphabet as well, but you make learning a delight.

Many many thanks – todah rabbah!! And long may you continue. Shalom."

Geraldine Watson
