Friendship

Shalom friends,
Friendship

What is friendship? How has the definition of friendship developed throughout the years? Are the features of biblical friends similar to the features of Facebook © friends?
Try to look at the following ancient quotes in the Hebrew language  and see if they apply to your current definition of friendship

Ve’ahavta lere’axa kamoxa.
You shall love your fellow/friend/neighbor as you love yourself (Leviticus 19: 18)

Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are.

The world stands upon three things: On Torah, worship, and loving deeds. (Pirkey Avot)

Ma shesanu alex al ta’ase lexaverxa.
Don't do unto others what you wouldn't want done to you. (Old Hillel)

Adam mibli xaverim – kismil bli yamin
A man with no friends – like left with no right. (Rabbi Solomon ibn Gabirol)

We would love to read your insights: Does virtual modern-friendship follow the same old rules? Do you have any interesting stories about friendship that were developed in our online Hebrew courses ? We may publish them in our next newsletter.

Hebrew Song: Friendship

Friendship

Lyrics : Chayim Guri
Music: Sasha Argov
Friendship

Friendship becomes stronger and more meaningful as memories are established and especially under significant events. Friendship in war time among soldiers was the inspiration for this beautiful song.

An autumn night falls on the Negev
And silently lights the stars
When the wind passes the threshold
Clouds walk the road.

Already a year and we almost haven’t felt
How the time passed in our fields
Already a year and only few of us are left
So many are not among us any longer.

But we’ll remember them all
We’ll remember their beauty
Because such friendship will never
Let our heart forget
Love sacred with blood
You will bloom again among us.

Al haNegev yored leyl hastav
Umatsit koxavim xeresh xeresh
Et haru’ax over al hasaf
Ananim mehalxim al haderex.

Kvar shana lo hirgashnu kim’at
Eyx avru hazmanim bisdoteynu
Kvar shana venotarnu me’at
Ma rabim she’eynam kvar beyneynu.

Ax nizkor et kulam
Et yefey hablorit vehato’ar
Ki re’ut shekazot le’olam
Lo titen et libenu lishko’ax
Ahava mekudeshet bedam
At tashuvi beyneynu lifro’ax.

You can listen to Har’el Ska’t singing this song  on Yitschak Rabin Remembrance day as this was one of our late prime minister favorite songs.

" Thank you for sending me the latest Newsletter. I can honestly say that this is the best and most informative Newsletter I have ever received from anyone. I really enjoyed the article about Tel Ch’ai and Josef Trumpeldor, and then to be able to hear the song sung in Hebrew while reading a phonetic translation was indeed brilliant. And to top it all there are Hebrew puzzles! You are truly gifted teachers to make learning so interesting. Learning a new language is never easy, especially when one has to learn a new alphabet as well, but you make learning a delight.

Many many thanks – todah rabbah!! And long may you continue. Shalom."

Geraldine Watson
