The Miracles of Hannukah

Shalom friends,

In the light of the upcoming Hanukkah Festival we will devote this issue to a very significant component of the holiday – Miracles. A miracle is called in Hebrew "נֵס" (nes) and is defined as a supernatural event or a wonderful occurrence that is considered to be the work of G-d. A synonym of the word "נס" in Hebrew is "דֶּגֶל" (degel, which also means “flag”). A miracle flags an unnatural intervention in reality, especially in cases of rescuing, healing, or triumph.

In the Hanukkah story we have evidences of multiple miracles: First, the Maccabaeus – a small, weakly armed group of Jewish rebels ruled by the Hasmonean family fought against the strong, well-equipped and well-trained Greek army and won! The consequence of the successful revolt was the abolishment of all the rules against the Jews. Eventually, this little army recaptured the Temple and rededicated it to God.
The second miracle followed the recapture of the Temple:  The Temple was in very bad condition featuring the Hellenistic Gods and much destruction. The Jews cleansed and purified it and wanted to light the Seven-Branches Candelabrum (מְנוֹרַת שִׁבְעַת הַקָּנִים, menorat shiv’at hakanim) that used to light the Temple constantly, but they found only a single cruse of pure oil, enough to light the menorah for a single day. A miracle occurred, and they lit the menorah with this oil for eight days. To celebrate these miraculous events, we light the Chanukiya (חֲנֻכִּיָּה) for eight days and eat oily foods.

Let’s conclude with a scientific saying about miracles by Albert Einstein: "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle."

Music: Yoel Walba

Translation Transliteration
A little cruse, a little cruse
Gave its oil for eight days
The whole nation wondered:
It refills all by itself.

kad katan, kad katan
shmona yamim shamno natan
kol ha’am hitpale:
me’elav hu mitmale.

All the nation then gathered
And declared: well, this is a miracle
Had this container remained
Our temple wouldn’t be lightened

kol ha’am ‘az hitkanes
vehixriz ‘ax zehu nes
‘ilule kad ze nish’ar
mikdashenu lo hu’ar

.

Hannukah Candle Lighting Blessings

Candle lightingEvery night of Hannukah, the Candles on the Chanukiya are lighted. On the first night, you light only the Shamash (שמש), the candle that is located at a different height, and one Hannukah candle. By the eighth night, you light all the candles.
Candles should be added to the Chanukiya from right to left (like Hebrew writing). The Shamash candle is lit first. While holding the shamash candle, recite the following blessings. They are usually sung. To best publicize the miracle, the Chanukiya is ideally placed on a window sill facing the public thoroughfare.
On the first night of Hannukah, the following three blessing are recited. On the following nights, only the first two blessings are recited.

First Blessing
Baruch ata Adonai, Elohenu melex ha’olam, asher kidshanu bemitzvotav, vetzivanu lehadlik ner shel Xanuka.  (Amen)
Blessed are you, Lord our G-d, King of the Universe, Who sanctified us by his commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the lights of Hannukah. (Amen)

Second Blessing
Baruch ata Adonai, Elohenu melex ha’olam, she'asa nisim la'avoteynu bayamim hahem bazman haze. (Amen)
Blessed are you, Lord our G-d, King of the Universe, Who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days at this time. (Amen)

Third Blessing (recited only at the first night)
Baruch ata Adonai, Elohenu melex ha’olam, shehexeyanu vekiyemanu vehigi'anu lazman haze. (Amen)
Blessed are you, Lord our G-d, King of the Universe, Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season. (Amen)

" Thank you for sending me the latest Newsletter. I can honestly say that this is the best and most informative Newsletter I have ever received from anyone. I really enjoyed the article about Tel Ch’ai and Josef Trumpeldor, and then to be able to hear the song sung in Hebrew while reading a phonetic translation was indeed brilliant. And to top it all there are Hebrew puzzles! You are truly gifted teachers to make learning so interesting. Learning a new language is never easy, especially when one has to learn a new alphabet as well, but you make learning a delight.

Many many thanks – todah rabbah!! And long may you continue. Shalom."
